A Bucket List Item...Charcuterie?

So the secret should be out by now...
Next March I'll be living about 8 miles Northeast of
Latitude: 40.821° N
Longitude: 14.426° E

:)

Onto the bucket list. I have a few. One of them being butchering my own whole hog and practicing the art of Charcuterie. I have great dreams of the glory of my own prosciutto, sausages, head cheese, ... Oh the excitement and possibilities. But sadly long distance triathlon racing doesn't mix with large amounts of pork eating. One day I'll give this racing up and I will delve into pork eating glory. I think my new favorite book is "Charcuterie and French Pork Cookery"... well that and "Mastering the Art of French Cooking."

Aurthur Lydiard has some very interesting ideas on approaching running. One of them is the Lydiard running week which is the 100 mile running week. Yup! 100 miles running. It just so happens that this is my largest running week in volume for my Ironman Texas build and my plan called for me getting "kinda" close to 100, so I thought F*^K IT! I'm doing it! I'm going 100 miles. It has been on the calender for almost 2 months with highlights reading don't be stupid to hit this, meaning don't hurt myself just to get to 100.

Today was really the marker whether I would go for it or not with a 50 mile ride followed with a 13.5 mile run. If the run was total misery and just too brutal then the week would be scrapped and tomorrow would be a long ride. Instead, I was tired but able to maintain a good pace. Sure, I couldn't accelerate or run downhill strong, but I never felt like I was in trouble. So for tomorrow I am going out 8.5 miles and then turnaround to make 17. Miles 14-17 are going to be at a hard pace and once I get back home I'll take the Commander's mini-beagle out for a 3 mile easy run to make 20. That will put me at 80 for the week.

Here's a little not so secret. Ice Baths. Sure I'm paying $3 for 30lbs of ice but I think it is worth every penny. 20 minutes sitting in ice and voila` OK not good as new but it sure does help recovery for tomorrow's run. **Men** Leave your shorts on while in the ice bath unless you want to see your penis completely suck itself up into your body cavity :) Yes I leave my shorts on because I have not interest in seeing myself resemble a 4 year old boy.

So far so good and I am 60 in with 40 to go over the next 3 days. 20 tomorrow. 13 Saturday. 7 Sunday for a total of 100... Yikes!

This is awesome. Can you get the Commander to record the infamous "stop being a little bitch" sound-bite so you can hit the "play" button on your ipod when your flashlight runs out of batteries while deep in the pain cave?

I'm 55 soon to be 56... shorts won't make a difference in the ice bath.... but I would be interested in seeing pictures...

you're really moving to Italy??

It sounds like it might be time for an Italian bike. And it might also be time to begin speaking with a faux Italian accent ala the kid in the movie Breaking Away.

As far as running 100 miles in one week, that's quite an accomplishment amidst IM training. I'm training for a half, and my mileage right now is much less than that (approx. 30 miles per week), but my body still feels weary at times.

As far as ice baths are concerned, you made me laugh.

Cheers!

lol, not to toot my own horn, but I hit the nail on the head...Naples is awesome, I spent some time there while my dad was stationed in Germany. Volcano repeats might be fun....

My friend just moved to Italy because her husband's in the military and she tells me how cheap and great the wine is. Awesome recovery drink. :)

You so have the 100 miles in ya! In one week isn't as impressive as one day, but it's still impressive! :) I'm just kidding with you - I know you're tougher than nails!

I will need your address in Italy so I have a place to stay :-)

100 miles of running in one weeks is ugly!

WOW! How exciting! What an amazing experience for the kiddo!

Ice baths are so worth the time, money, and torture.
